Born James Crespo Jr. on July 5 1954 in Brooklyn, New York, US, Jimmy Crespo is a musician and songwriter. He is mostly known as the lead guitarist of Aerosmith from 1979 until 1984. He has also worked, live and in studio, with Meat Loaf, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Robert Fleischman, Rough Cutt, Billy Squier...
He started to learn to play the guitar when he was 14 and joined his first band, The Knomes, soon after.
With years, he became an accomplished guitarist, taking examples on the styles of bands and artists like Jimmy Page in The Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Cream...
After drawing the attention of music industry figures with his New York club band Anaconda, Crespo worked with artists like Meat Loaf and Stevie Nicks.
Later, he was recruited by producer Jimmy Iovine to play lead guitar in the band Flame (fronted by Marge Raymond).
The band released two albums, Queen of the Neighborhood (1977) and Flame (1978).
When Flame broke up, Crespo came back to session work.
It's at this moment that he was noticed by Aerosmith's management. The band needed a new lead guitarist after Joe Perry's departure.
Crespo was asked to join Aerosmith in October 1979 and started touring with them not long after joining.
The tour was hampered by Steven Tyler's state, the singer was heavily addicted to drugs and suffered several on-stage collapses.
At this time, the drummer Joey Kramer formed the band Renegade and recruited Marge Raymond, Jimmy Crespo, Tom Hamilton and Bob Mayo to complete the lineup. The band recorded an album which was never released.
In spite of Tyler's troubles, Crespo and the singer forged a songwriting and touring partnership.
With Tyler, Crespo co-wrote six songs for the album Rock in a Hard Place (released in 1982).
In 1984, Crespo had to leave the band as the classic lineup of Aerosmith (Steven Tyler (lead vocals, harmonica, piano, percussion, guitar, bass), Joe Perry (guitar, backing vocals), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), Joey Kramer (drums, percussion)) re-formed.
After his departure, Crespo joined The Adam Bomb Band (original lineup: Adam Bomb (vocals, guitar), Jimmy Crespo (guitar), Phil Feit (bass), Gregg Gerson (drums)). He played on the album Fatal Attraction (1985).
From 1987 to 1992, he played guitars in Bandaloo Doctors, a supergroup composed of drummer Dallas Taylor, bassist and songwriter Danny Sheridan and vocalist Bonnie Bramlett.
From 1994 to 1996, Crespo was lead guitarist for Rod Stewart's live band.
He is currently working on a project with drummer Carmine Appice and he is also writing and recording material for a solo project.
