Happy birthday, Joe Elliott...
Born Joseph Thomas Elliott on August 1 1959 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Joe Elliott is a singer, songwriter and musician best known as the vocalist of Def Leppard.
In November 1977, he met Pete Willis, who played guitar in a band called Atomic Mass. Not long after, Joe auditionned for the band as a guitarist but was eventually hired as lead singer. Their first gig together was at the Westfield School in Sheffield (lineup: Joe Elliott (vocals), Pete Willis (guitar, backing vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Tony Kenning (drums, percussion)).
Joe later suggested to change the band's name to Deaf Leopard, a name he had created while writing reviews for imaginary bands for school, and it was Tony Kenning who had the idea of spelling it Def Leppard.
In January 1978, after watching him play Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird for his audition, the band hired Steve Clark.
One year later, in January 1979, Def Leppard released their self-produced debut EP, The Def Leppard E.P.. Drummer Tony Kenning had left the band just before the beginning of the recording sessions and was replaced by Frank Noon. After the end of the recording, Frank Noon was replaced by Rick Allen who became the band's full-time drummer.
Their debut album, On Through The Night was released the following year and reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and number 51 on the Billboard 200. On Throuh The Night helped establishing Def Leppard as one of the leaders of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Yet, British fans were feeling like Def Leppard were giving too much importance to American fans by touring more in the US than in their own country.
After supporting AC/DC on the American leg of the Back in Black tour in 1980, Def Leppard began to work with their producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The following year, the band released their second studio album High 'n' Dry. The album didn't sell really well at first but after MTV began playing Bringin' On the Heartbreak's video in 1982, more than 2 million copies were sold. After the release of High 'n' Dry, Def Leppard supported Ozzy Osbourne and Blackfoot in Europe.
While in the studio to record their third album, in July 1982, Def Leppard fired Pete Willis for he was drinking alcohol while working, and hired Phil Collen to replace him.
Released on January 20 1983, Pyromania reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 and number 18 on the UK Albums Chart, and its lead single, Photograph, became the most requested music video on MTV, ousting Mickael Jackson's Beat It.
The recording of Hysteria, the band's fourth album, was interrupted in January 1985 after Rick Allen had lost his left arm in a car crash on December 31 1984. The band decided not to replace him, and to wait for him to recover and to find a way for him to keep on playing the drums.
In August 1986, Def Leppard hired drummer Jeff Rich to help Rick Allen during their mini tour of Ireland, yet, after he missed a concert, the band realised Rick Allen was able to play alone.
Afterwards, Def Leppard began working again on their next album. Released in August 1987, Hysteria reached number 1 in the UK (1987), in the US (1988) and in Australia (1988), and is still their best selling album to date. Since its release, the album has been certified 12 times platinum in the US, 10 times platinum in Canada, 4 times platinum in Australia and 2 times platinum in the UK. The album is also one of the rare albums to have had 7 singles in the US Hot 100: Women (1987, number 80), Animal (1987, number 19), Hysteria (1987, number 10), Pour Some Sugar on Me (1987, number 2), Love Bites (1988, number 1), Armageddon It (1988, number 3), and Rocket (1989, number 12). The 236-date headline tour promoting the album was also a success.
After the end of the tour, Def Leppard began working on their next album but Steve Clark's worsening alcoholism slowed them down. Often distracted during the recording sessions, he was found dead on January 8 1991, after a 6-month absence from the band. The autopsy revealed his death was caused by an accidental mix of alcohol and prescription drugs.
Following Steve Clark's death, the band members decided to finish the recording of the album as a quartet, with Phil Collen playing both his guitar parts and Steve Clark's guitar parts, for which he imitated the latter's style.
Released on March 31 1992, Adrenalize debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart. It was also the last album classified as glam metal to sell so well (it was certified multi platinum in the US and in Canada) during the rise and explosion of grunge which had brought down the popularity of the genre and of 1980s music in general.
On April 20 1992, Joe performed Queen's Tie Your Mother Down alongside Brian May and Slash at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
The same year, Joe also sang on Ronnie Wood's fifth solo album, Slide on This, released on September 8 1992.
After auditioning guitarists such as John Sykes and Adrian Smith, Def Leppard finally hired Vivian Campbell to replace Steve Clark.
On October 23 1995, Def Leppard performed three shows on three different continents: one in Tangiers, Morocco, one in London, England, and one in Vancouver, Canada, and thus entered the Guinness Book of World Records. The same year, they released their first greatest hit album Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits (19801995).
Their first studio album with Vivian Campbell, Slang, was released on May 14 1996. Its sound, which was more in an alternative rock style, made it differ from the band's previous albums.
The band regained popularity in 1998 after featuring in one of the first episodes of VH1's Behind the Music. Soon after, they recorded the album Euphoria, which was released in 1999 and marked a comeback to the sound which gave the band its success in the 1980s.
In 2001, alongside Phil Collen, Trevor Bolder, Mick Woodmansey and Dick Decent, Joe formed the short-lived David Bowie cover band Cybernauts as a tribute to Mick Ronson. The same year, they released a two-CD set featuring a live album and the studio EP The Further Adventures of the Cybernauts.
The following year, Def Leppard released its more pop-oriented eighth studio album, X (pronounced "ten"). Although it is their least successful release, the tour promoting the album saw the band meeting their biggest audience since the early 1990s.
On May 23 2006, they released a classic rock cover album called Yeah! which featured covers of bands such as The Kinks, T. Rex, Roxie Music, Thin Lizzy, and many others.
In April 2008, six years after their last release featuring new studio material, Def Leppard released the album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.
In 2009, Joe formed Down 'n' Outz, a band that covers songs from bands and artists related to Mott the Hoople such as British Lions and Ian Hunter. The band released its debut album, My ReGeneration, in July 2010 (lineup: Joe Elliott (lead vocals, backing vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, percussion), Paul Guerin (lead and rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Guy Griffin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Ronnie Garrity (bass), Phil Martin (drums, backing vocals), Keith Weir (keyboards, backing vocals)).
In June 2011, Def Leppard released the live album Mirror Ball Live & More, which featured live recordings from 2008 and 2009, three new studio songs, and a DVD of concert and backstage footage.
The release of the album was followed by the 64-date Mirror Ball Tour.
In 2012, alongside musicians such as Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Glenn Hughes, Steve Stevens... Joe joined the band Kings of Chaos, also known as the Rock N Roll All-Stars. The band played songs from its members original bands (Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Deep Purple...) as well as other classic rock covers. Joe performed in the band until November 2014.
From March 22 to April 13 2013, Def Leppard played eleven shows for their residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The shows were divided in two parts: the first one being Def Leppard pretending to be a Def Leppard cover band called Ded Flatbird and playing songs that were usually not played live, and the second one was Def Leppard as themselves playing the entirety of Hysteria. The shows of March 29 and March 30 were recorded and released in October 2013 as the live album Viva! Hysteria.
Def Leppard's eponymous eleventh album was released on October 30 2015 and reached number 5 on the Billboard 200.
In December 2015, Def Leppard went on a 10-date UK and Ireland tour with Whitesnake and Black Star Riders.
In February 2017, Def Leppard released the double live album and video And There Will be a Next Time... Live from Detroit.
