Happy birthday, Nicko McBrain...
Born Michael Henry McBrain on June 5 1952 in Hackney, London, Nicko McBrain is a musician best known for having been the drummer of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden since 1982.
It's after watching a performance of Joe Morello with The Dave Brubeck Quartet on television that he first wanted to learn to play the drums.
When he was ten, he began to play drums with kitchen utensils like pots and pans.
His father bought him his first drum kit when he was eleven or twelve.
He started playing regularly at pubs and weddings when he was 14.
He paid his rent by undertaking session work though he had obtained a degree in engineering (at his parents' request).
Later, he joined a small pub band, The 18th Fairfield Walk (later known as Peyton Bond), which performed The Beatles, The Who and Otis Redding covers.
McBrain soon left them to join The Wells Street Blues Band (renamed The Axe in 1969) but the band split up after an argument between the singer and the guitarist.
In 1975, he joined Streetwalkers, later he joined Pat Travers and then he started playing with Trust (lineup in 1982 : Bernie Bonvoisin (Vocals), Norbert Krief (Guitar), Yves Brusco (Bass), Nicko McBrain (Drums)).
He met Iron Maiden members for the first time in 1981, while touring with Trust.
In 1982, he was asked to replace Iron Maiden's drummer, Clive Burr. He made his first appearance with the band on German TV disguised as Eddie.
Even if the band's lineup changed a lot during the 1990s, McBrain still stayed in Iron Maiden (classic lineup: Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Nicko McBrain).
He writes the drum parts for all the songs of the band. He received two songwriting credits for non album tracks : Mission From 'Arry (B-side of 2 Minutes to Midnight (1984)) and Nodding Donkey Blues (B-side of Be Quick or Be Dead (1992)). He has also cowrote the song New Frontier (from Dance of Death (2003)).
Adrian Smith said that Steve Harris loves playing with McBrain.
In total, McBrain has contributed to twelve studio albums of Iron Maiden.
