Happy birthday, Oliver Sykes...
Born Oliver Scott Sykes on November 20 1986 in Ashford, Kent, England, Oliver Sykes is a musician best known as the singer of Bring Me The Horizon and as the founder of the apparel company Drop Dead Clothing.
While still in high school, he began getting more into music and playing in bands. With his brother, he played in Womb 2 Da Bomb, a mock hip-hop band. He also played in Purple Curto and had a side project named Olisaurus (Oli Has a Death Wish).
The members were between 15 and 17 when Bring Me The Horizon was formed in March 2004 (lineup: Oliver Sykes (lead vocals, keyboards), Lee Malia (lead guitar, backing vocals), Curtis Ward (rhythm guitar), Matt Kean (bass guitar), Matt Nicholls (drums, percussion)). The band's name was inspired by the final line of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: "Now, bring me that horizon."
Later the same year, the band recorded a three-song demo album titled The Bedroom Sessions. Their debut EP, This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For, was released in October 2004.
They released their first album, Count Your Blessings, in October 2006. Following the release of the album they went on a long UK tour and afterwards joined Lostprophets and The Blackout on their UK tour in late 2006.
In January 2007, they replaced Bury Your Dead on Killswitch Engage's European headline tour. However, they were poorly received by the fans who sometimes threw bottles at the band before the beginning of their set.
To promote their second studio album, Suicide Season, in 2008, Bring Me The Horizon embarked on their first headline US tour and were also part of the lineup of the 2008 Warped Tour.
In May 2008, alongside The Ghost Inside and The Red Shore, they supported I Killed the Prom Queen on their farewell tour in Australia.
A bit more than a year after the release of Suicide Season, they released Suicide Season: Cut Up!, a remixed version of the album featuring different music genres like hip-hop, electronica and dubstep.
During the recording of There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret. in Sweden in early 2010, Oliver suffered intense night terrors for ten days in a row. The band finished recording the album in Los Angeles just before the beginning of the 2010 Warped Tour (lineup: Oliver Sykes (lead vocals, keyboards), Lee Malia (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jona Weinhofen (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Matt Kean (bass guitar), Matt Nicholls (drums, percussion)).
In December 2010, they went on a five-date arena tour of the UK with Atreyu and Bullet For My Valentine, the latters being the headliners of the tour.
After touring intensely in 2011, the band took a break from the stage and began working on their next studio album. Like for their previous two albums, they isolated themselves so they could stay focused on the writing.
Released in 2013, Sempiternal, Bring Me The Horizon's fourth studio album, quickly reached No. 3 on the UK Album Chart and was also No. 11 on the US Billboard Chart. At that time, it was the band's highest charting album in the U.S. (lineup: Oliver Sykes (lead vocals), Lee Malia (guitars, backing vocals), Matt Kean (bass guitar), Matt Nicholls (drums, percussion), Jordan Fish (keyboards, synthesizer, percussion, backing vocals)).
The same year, the band performed several festivals around the world: Soundwave festival in Australia, RAMFest in South Africa, Rock Am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in Germany, and Warped Tour 2013 in the U.S. and in Canada. They also went on a headline UK tour with Crossfaith and Empress AD.
On December 5 2014, supported by Young Guns, Issues and Sleepwave, Bring Me The Horizon performed at Wembley Arena in London. The concert was recorded and released as the live album and DVD Live at Wembley in June 2015.
Their lastest album, That's the Spirit, was released in September 2015 and reached No. 2 on the UK Album Chart and on the US Billboard Chart.
To conclude, we wish a happy birthday and years of rock to Oliver Sykes!
