Born Alexander Arthur Van Halen on May 8, 1953 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, Alex Van Halen is a musician best known as the drummer and co-founder of the hard rock band Van Halen. Initially, he played guitar and his brother, Eddie (Edward Van Halen), took drums lessons. He started playing Eddie's drum kit and, after a while, became more skillful than him. One day, Eddie found out about it, and out of frustration he told Alex, "OK, you play drums and I'll go play your guitar."
They were born in Amsterdam. Their father was Dutch and their mom from Indonesia. Alex and Eddie were trained as classical pianists in their childhood. In 1962, the family moved to Pasadena, California.
Alex's influences include Keith Moon, John Bonham, Ginger Baker and the jazz drummer Buddy Rich.
Alex and Eddie formed Mammoth in 1972 (lineup : Eddie (lead vocals and lead guitar), Mark Stone (bass) and Alex (drums)).
With David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony, they formed the band Van Halen, in 1974. In 1978, they released their debut album, which was considered by the fans and the critics to be one of the most "original and revolutionary albums to change rock and roll."
The Van Halen brothers are the only members who have been in the band for its entire duration.
By the early 80s, they were one of the most succesful rock bands of the time.
Their most successful album is 1984 (over 12 millions copies sold in the US alone). The lead single, Jump, which is their only single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, became an international hit.
In 1985, the band switched David Lee Roth to Sammy Hagar. With him, they released four US number-one albums in 11 years.
In 1996, the band recruited Gary Cherone (ex Extreme) after Hagar left the band. Cherone left the band after the tour in 1999 frustrated by the poor commercial performance of the album.
The band went on hiatus until 2003. Then they reuinited with Hagar for a worldwide tour.
In 2005, Hagar left the band again and in 2006, David Lee Roth returned as lead vocalist.
The band released the album A Different Kind of Truth (lineup : David Lee Roth (vocals), Eddie Van Halen (lead guitar), Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son)(bass), Alex Van Halen (drums)), which was critically and commercially successful, in 2012.
