Born on October 10 1954 in Bloomington, Indiana, United States, David Lee Roth is a rock singer, songwriter, author, actor and former radio personality. He is best known as the frontman of the hard rock band Van Halen. He is the original (1974-1985) and current (2006-present) frontman of the band.
Roth met Eddie and Alex Van Halen at the Pasadena City College. At that time, he was working as a hospital orderly.
Van Halen gained local success for performing original and cover songs. They regulary played at the Starwood Club.
Gene Simmons noticed them in 1976 and helped them in producing their first demo tape.
The tape featured songs that are also on their debut album.
Their first album, Van Halen, was released in 1978 and was a success (over twelve millions copies sold).
As lead singer and principal lyricist, Roth was an important part in the band's success.
Even if he had a wild image, Roth wrote clever lyrics that worked in harmony with the music Edward Van Halen composed.
In 1985, Roth released a solo EP, Crazy from the Heat. The music videos, featuring ridiculous characters created by Roth and Pete Angelus (Roth's Creative Chief Director), for the singles California Girls and Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody helped to get success.
Roth and Eddie Van Halen had started going into two different creative directions. Indeed, Roth wanted to write songs about party and sex (like Aerosmith, for example) whereas Van Halen wanted to write more serious and deep lyrics.
Roth officially left Van Halen on April 1, 1985.
Later the same year, Roth put together a virtuoso band : Steve Vai on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass and Gregg Bissonette on drums.
He released his debut solo LP, Eat 'Em and Smile, in July 1986. The album reached number 4 on the Billboard Top 200.
His last solo album, Diamond Dave, was released in 2003.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Edward Van Halen, Michael Anthony, Alex Van Halen and Sammy Hagar in March 2007.
On August 13, 2007, Van Halen and Roth confirmed during a press conference that they would start a tour together in September.
The 2007-2008 with David Lee Roth grossed over $93 million, a record for the band.
Van Halen released the album A Different Kind of Truth on February 7, 2012.
