Born Bernadette Jean Johnson on 20 June 1958 in Edmonton, London, England (died: 15 July 2007), Kelly Johnson was a guitarist widely known in the UK in the early 1980s as the lead guitarist of the all-female heavy metal band Girlschool.
Johnson started playing piano after her father when she was five years old and switched to guitar at twelve.
At school, she discovered rock music and played bass and piano in short-live bands.
She went back to guitar and was already writing and playing her own material when she met her future bandmates at the age of 19.
After her first encounter with Kim McAuliffe and Enid Williams in April 1978, she was immediately accepted in the ranks of the new band formed from the ashes of the group Painted Lady, which took the name of Girlschool (Girlschool classic line-up: Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams, Kelly Johnson, Denise Dufort)
Johnson was a songwriter, playing lead guitar and singing both lead and backing vocals on the group's first four albums. She provided both a strong visual focus for the band with her tall figure and blonde hair and an excellent musical contribution with her trenchant guitar playing.
Girlschool didn’t take feminist positions, but the simple fact of being an all-female band in a genre dominated by male musicians and often by machismo and sexist attitudes was a statement in itself.
The eminent rock guitarist Jeff Beck was saying about Kelly Johnson that he couldn't believe it was a girl who was playing guitar like that and Lemmy Kilmister, the leader of Motörhead, declared that "the nights that she was really on, she was as good as Jeff Beck".
Girlschool had their best UK chart success in 1980 and 1981, with the EP St. Valentine's Day Massacre and the album Hit and Run, but their success soon declined and their approach to the US market with the album Play Dirty was not as successful as hoped.
At the beginning of 1984, Johnson left the band.
Johnson immediately left England for Los Angeles, California, to start a new career and to live with Vicki Blue, former bassist of the all-female band The Runaways, who was also her manager.
In 1987, she entered the rock band World’s Cutest Killers, which included on rhythm guitar and vocals former Painted Lady member Kathy Valentine. WCK changed their name to The Renegades and worked the local club circuit, but gained no record contract.
Concluding her experience with this band after two years, she left music altogether to learn sign language and work with the deaf.
The pull of rock 'n' roll was too strong to keep Johnson away from her guitar for long and in 1993, after almost ten years in the USA, she returned to the UK to resume her role as lead guitarist of Girlschool for a much publicized reunion tour. She remained with the band and toured incessantly until 1999, when she was diagnosed with cancer.
Even if she left active duty, Johnson remained strictly associated with Girlschool, playing the occasional gig, instructing her substitute Jackie Chambers and gathering photos and material for a band biography.
Johnson died on Sunday 15 July 2007, aged 49, after a six-year battle against spinal cancer. The fact she had this disease was not widely known outside her close circle of friends and even closer family.

Johnson a été auteur-compositrice, a joué de la guitare, a chanté et fait les choeurs sur les quatre premiers albums du groupe. Elle a été l'image du groupe avec sa haute taille et ses cheveux blonds et a apporté une excellente contribution musicale avec son jeu de guitare tranchant.
Girlschool n'a pas pris de positions féministes, mais le simple fait d'être un groupe féminin dans un genre dominé par des musiciens masculins machistes et les attitudes sexistes était une déclaration en elle-même.
L'éminent guitariste de rock Jeff Beck a été dit à propos de Kelly Johnson qu'il ne pouvait pas croire que c'était une fille qui jouait de la guitare comme ça et Lemmy Kilmister, le leader de Motörhead, a déclaré que "les nuits où elle jouait à fond, elle était aussi douée que Jeff Beck ".
Girlschool a connu ses plus grand succès au Royaume-Uni en 1980 et 1981, avec l'EP St. Valentine's Day Massacre et l'album Hit and Run, mais le succès à très vite décliné et leur approche du marché américain avec l'album Play Dirty n'a pas eu le succès escompté.
Au début de 1984, Johnson a quitté Girlschool et l'Angleterre pour s'établir à Los Angeles, en Californie, commencer une nouvelle carrière et s'installer avec Vicki Blue, l'ancienne bassiste du groupe exclusivement féminin The Runaways, qui était aussi son manager.
En 1987, elle a rejoint le groupe de rock World’s Cutest Killers, avec à la guitare rythmique et au chant l'ancien membre de Painted Lady, Kathy Valentine. WCK changé de nom pour The Renegades et a fait la tournée des club locaux, mais n'a signé aucun contrat d'enregistrement.
Après deux ans, en conclusion de son expérience avec ce groupe, elle a plaqué la musique et appris la langue des signes et travailla avec les personnes malentendantes.
L'attraction du rock'n'roll était trop forte pour garder Johnson loin de sa guitare trop longtemps et en 1993, après près de dix ans aux Etats-Unis, elle est revenue au Royaume-Uni et retrouva sa place de guitariste de Girlschool pour une tournée de retrouvailles très mediatisée. Elle est restée avec le groupe et tourna sans cesse jusqu'en 1999, quand lui fut diagnostiqué un cancer.
Même si elle avait quité le devant de la scène, Johnson est restée intimement associée à Girlschool, jouant occasionnellement le temps d'un concert, initiant sa remplaçante Jackie Chambers et rassemblant photos et enregistrements en vue de rédiger une biographie du groupe.
Johnson est décédé le dimanche 15 Juillet 2007, à 49 ans, après une bataille de six ans contre un cancer de la moelle osseuse, maladie dont seule sa famille et ses plus proches amis étaient informés.
