Happy birthday, Iggy Pop...
Born James Newell Osterberg, Jr. on April 21 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan, U.S., Iggy Pop is a singer, songwriter, musician and actor.
When he was in high school, he played the drums in various bands.
He started to be known as "Iggy" when he was drummer for the blues band The Iguanas.
After playing with some local blues bands like the Primer Movers, he dropped out of the University of Michigan and moved to Chicago.
He was inspired by Chicago blues and by bands like The MC5, The Sonis and The Doors.
He began calling himself Iggy when he formed the Psychedelic Stooges (Iggy (vocals), Ron Asheton (guitar), Dave Alexander (bass) and Scott Asheton (drums)).
Iggy's vocals and stage persona were influenced by Mick Jagger, James Brown and Jim Morrison. Morrison's behavior on stage inspired Iggy to push the boundaries of stage performance (he has performed stage theatrics as exposing himself to the crowd, rolling in broken glass, vomiting on stage...).
Iggy is known as the first performer to do a stage-dive.
The Stooges started playing live one year before signing with Elektra Records in 1968.
On The Stooges' first two albums (The Stooges and Fun House, which both sold poorly) Iggy was credited as Iggy Stooge.
Because of Iggy's heroin addiction, the band disbanded.
In 1971, Iggy met David Bowie in New York, at a nightclub and restaurant called Max's Kansas City.
In 1972, Bowie decided to produce an album with Iggy in England. They took James Williamson as guitarist but since they were not satisfied with any players for the other instruments, they decided to re-unite The Stooges.
It wasn't a "true" reunion since Dave Alexander was unable to play because of his chronic alcoholism, also, in order to make Williamson play guitar, Ron Asheton reluctantly moved from guitar to bass.
One year after the release of the album Raw Power (1973), Scott Thurston joined the band on keyboard/electric piano. However, Iggy's drug problem persisted. The band's last show ended in a fight between a group of bikers and the band.
Iggy couldn't control his drug use and decided to go to a mental institution, UCLA's neuropsychiatric institute, to try to get clean.
Bowie helped Iggy to write and to produce The Idiot and Lust for Life.
Bowie and Iggy also wrote together songs that would be performed on Bowie's album (China Girl, Tonight, Sister Midnight...).
Iggy published his autobiography, I NEED MORE, co-written with Anne Weher, in 1980.
When David Bowie recorded the songs he had written with Iggy, it assured financial security to Iggy and enabled him to take a break of three years. During this break, he took acting classes and overcame his heroin addiction.
In 1984, Iggy contributed, with Steve Jones, to the song Repo Man (soundtrack for the same titled movie).
In 1985, he contributed, with Lou Reed, to the animated film Rock & Rule.
In 1986, Iggy released his new-wave influenced album, Blah Blah Blah, featuring a cover of Johnny O'Keefe's The Wild One (1958). On Iggy's album, the song is called Real Wild Child. Blah Blah Blah reached number 75 on Billboard Top 200 albums chart.
He recorded his album Brick by Brick in 1990 with guests musicians like Duff McKagan and Slash.
The three surviving founding members of The Stooges (Iggy Pop, Ron and Scott Asheton) were reunited for the first time since 1974 in 2003, on Iggy's album Skull Ring.
Iggy reformed The Stooges with the Asheton brothers, Mike Watt (bassist) and Steve Mackay (saxophonist).
In 2009, after Ron Asheton died of a heart attack, James Williamson rejoined the band.
Iggy Pop and The Stooges were inducted to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2010.
