Happy birthday, Eric Carr...
Born Paul Charles Caravello on July 12 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S., Eric Carr was a musician best known for being the drummer of Kiss from 1980 to 1991.
A big Beatles fan, he was, with another boy, the only student in his high school to have long hair. While in high school, he played in many bands. They would play Top 40 songs covers.
When he was 15, along with his friends, he formed his first band, The Cellarmen. They played in local clubs in Brooklyn and Queens, and recorded a few things in a small Brooklyn studio before disbanding in 1968.
Afterwards, Eric joined the band Things That Go Bump in the Night and then the band Smack.
In 1970, Eric joined a multi-genres band called Salt & Pepper, which was called this way because half of its members were black and the others were white.
Three years later, they changed their name to Creation and began playing disco music.
However, in 1974, while the band was playing a gig at Gulliver's nightclub in Port Chester, New York, a fire caused by a thief trying to cover his tracks killed dozens of people at the gig, including Creation's keyboardist and lead singer. Eric managed to escape safely and even saved one of the band's female singers.
After the tragedy, the band changed its name to Bionic Boogie and carried on their career, enjoying success as the opening acts for artists such as Nina Simone and Stevie Wonder.
Eric stayed in the band until its breakup in 1979.
After Bionic Boogie's split, Eric auditioned and joined a rock 'n' roll cover band called Flasher. In January 1980, the band began playing at clubs but Eric had begun to feel desillusioned and discouraged after spending more than 10 years playing music without breaking through. When he realized that with Flasher he was actually making half as much money as he used to make with his own band as a teenager, he started to consider quitting music for another career.
After the departure of their keyboardist, Flasher went on as a trio but were booked for less and less gigs and in May 1980, Eric decided to leave the band.
Not long after, he met someone in a club in Queens who told him that Kiss were looking for a drummer after Peter Criss' departure and decided to try to audition for them. He sent them a tape of him covering and singing Kiss' song Shandi. He put it in a bright orange folder to make sure it would be noticed.
Eric was the last person to audition for the band and, in case he was not hired and never saw them again, he asked them to sign the list of song he was going to play with them (Kiss lineup after Eric Carr joined: Paul Stanley (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ace Frehley (lead guitar, vocals), Gene Simmons (bass, lead vocals), Eric Carr (drums, percussion, vocals)).
He was only notified he had been hired two weeks before his first show with them. He decided to use the name Eric Carr as it was rhythmically close to Peter Criss.
Originally, he wanted his stage personna to be "The Hawk", however, the makeup was very difficult to realize and the others did not like the costume, so he eventually came up with "The Fox".
His first show with Kiss was at The Palladium in New York on July 25 1980.
Kiss' first album with Eric was Music from "The Elder", released in 1981. He also contributed to the writing of two songs, Under the Rose and Escape from the Island.
In the studio, he would also pay the guitar, the bass and the piano. He also sometimes sang lead vocals on some songs during shows.
Having grown frustrated with the band's new musical direction and by the fact that Eric was not treated as equal by the rest of the band, Ace Frehley left Kiss in 1982 and was replaced by Vinnie Vincent.
Later the same year, Kiss released the album Creatures of the Night, which, although it did better than its predecessor Music from "The Elder", failed to really meet success.
With the decrease of their popularity, Kiss opted for a massive change and, on September 18 1983, on MTV, appeared for the first time without makeup and costumes. Their new album, Lick It Up, was released the same day.
This unmasking allowed the band to regain popularity, Lick It Up reached gold 3 months after its release.
However, the tour promoting the album was filled with tension and, after the end of the tour, Vinnie Vincent left the band and was replaced by Mark St. John.
Their next album, Animalize, was released in September 13 1984 and, with over two million copies sold, was the band's best selling album in the 1980s.
Eric recorded lead vocals in the studio for the first time when the band re-recorded Peter Criss' song Beth for the compilation album Smashes, Thrashes & Hits, which was released in 1988 (lineup: Paul Stanley (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Bruce Kulick (lead guitar, vocals, keyboards), Gene Simmons (bass, lead vocals), Eric Carr (drums, percussion, vocals)).
While Kiss was working on their next album, Eric wrote the music for a song for which he recorded the demo with Bruce Kulick on the guitar and himself on the bass and on the drums and, finding it difficult to write lyrics, using the lyrics of Marvin Gaye's Ain't That Peculiar. After listening to the demo, Gene Simmons wrote new lyrics for it and added it to Kiss' next album, Hot in the Shade (1989), under the name Little Caesar.
Eric's last performance with Kiss was at the Madison Square Garden, New York, on November 9 1990.
In February 1991, Eric fell ill. Although at first doctors thought it was nothing too serious, further tests revealed he was suffering from a very rare type of cancer, heart cancer.
In April 1991, he had to go through a series of surgeries in order to remove the tumors and stop the cancer from growing. After recovering from the surgeries, he went back to working with the band.
The last time he worked with the band was in July 1991 when they filmed the video for God Gave Rock 'N Roll to You, which is also his final recording. After the filming of the video, his health had deteriorated so much he could not record the rest of the album and was sent home by the band so he could try to recover.
The MTV Video Music Awards of September 1991 marked his last public appearance. Shortly after, he suffered an aneurysm and had to be rushed to a hospital.
A few days later, he suffered a brain hemorrhage and never woke up again.
Eric died on November 24 1991. However, he happened to die the same day as Freddie Mercury so the media did not pay that much attention to him.
Eric being known for being very accessible to his fans, his family decided that his funerals would be open to the public, although the interment remained private.
He rests at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in the Town of Newburgh, New York.

Très fan des Beatles, il est, avec un autre garçon, le seul élève de son lycée à avoir les cheveux longs. Au lycée, il joue dans de nombreux groupes qui font des reprises de chansons du Top 40.
Quand il a 15 ans, avec ses amis, il forme son premier groupe, The Cellarmen. Ils jouent dans des clubs locaux à Brooklyn et dans le Queens, et enregistrent quelques trucs dans un petit studio à Brooklyn avant de se séparer en 1968.
Après cela, Eric rejoint le groupe Things That Go Bump in the Night puis le groupe Smack.
En 1970, il rejoint le groupe multi-genres Salt & Pepper, qui doit son nom au fait que la moitié de ses membres sont noirs et les autres blancs.
Trois ans après, ils changent leur nom pour Creation et commencent à jouer du disco.

Après la séparation de Bionic Boogie, Eric auditionne et rejoint le groupe de reprises de rock 'n' roll Flasher. En janvier 1980, le groupe commence à jouer dans des clubs mais Eric avait déjà commencé à se sentir désillusionné et découragé après avoir joué de la musique pendant plus de 10 ans sans réussir à percer. Quand il se rend compte qu'avec Flasher il gagne moitié moins que ce qu'il gagnait avec son groupe quand il était adolescent, il commence à considérer arrêter la musique et se lancer dans une autre carrière.
Après le départ de leur claviériste, Flasher continuent en tant que trio mais font de moins en moins de concerts et, en mai 1980, Eric décide de quitter le groupe.
Peu après, il rencontre quelqu'un dans un club dans le Queens qui lui dit que Kiss sont à la recherche d'un batteur après le départ de Peter Criss et il décide d'essayer d'auditionner pour eux. Il leur envoie une cassette de lui reprenant et chantant la chanson de Kiss Shandi. Il met sa cassette dans une enveloppe orange fluo afin d’être sûr qu'elle soit remarquée.
Eric est la dernière personne à auditionner pour le groupe et, au cas où il ne soit pas pris et ne les revoit jamais, il leur demande de signer la liste de chansons qu'il va jouer avec eux (lineup de Kiss après qu'Eric Carr les ait rejoint : Paul Stanley (chant, guitare rythmique), Ace Frehley (lead guitare, chant), Gene Simmons (basse, chant), Eric Carr (batterie, percussions, chant)).
Il n'est informé qu'il est accepté dans Kiss deux semaines seulement avant son premier concert avec eux. Il décide d'utiliser le nom Eric Carr car c'est rythmiquement proche de Peter Criss.
Au début, il veut que son personnage de scène soit "The Hawk" (le faucon), cependant, le maquillage est trop difficile à faire et les autres n'aiment pas le costume, alors il trouve finalement l'idée de "The Fox" (le renard).
Son premier concert avec Kiss a lieu au Palladium à New York, le 25 juillet 1980.
Le premier album de Kiss avec Eric est Music from "The Elder", sorti en 1981. Il contribue aussi à l'écriture de deux chansons, Under the Rose et Escape from the Island.

Cette tombée des masques permet au groupe de retrouver de la popularité, Lick It Up devient disque d'or trois mois après sa sortie.
Cependant, la tournée de promotion de l'album est submergée par les tensions et, après la fin de la tournée, Vinnie Vincent quitte le groupe et est remplacé par Mark St. John.
Leur album suivant, Animalize, sort le 13 septembre 1984 et, avec plus de deux millions de copies vendues, est l'album du groupe qui s'est le mieux vendu des années 1980.
Eric enregistre le chant principal d'une chanson en studio pour la première fois quand le groupe ré-enregistre la chanson de Peter Criss Beth pour la compilation Smashes, Thrashes & Hits, qui sort en 1988 (lineup: Paul Stanley (chant, gutiare rythmique), Bruce Kulick (lead guitare, chant, clavier), Gene Simmons (basse, chant), Eric Carr (batterie, percussion, chant)).
Alors que Kiss travaillent sur le prochain album, Eric écrit la musique d'une chanson pour laquelle il enregistre une démo avec Bruce Kulick à la guitare et lui même à la basse et à la batterie et, ayant des difficultés à écrire des paroles, il utilise les paroles de Ain't That Peculiar de Marvin Gaye. Après avoir écouté la démo, Gene Simmons écrit de nouvelles paroles et ajoute la chanson au prochain album de Kiss, Hot in the Shade (1989), sous le nom Little Caesar.
Le dernier concert d'Eric avec Kiss a lieu au Madison Square Garden, New York, le 9 novembre 1990.
En février 1991, Eric tombe malade. Bien qu'au début les médecins pensent qu'il ne s'agit de rien de trop grave, des tests plus poussés montrent qu'il souffre d'une forme de cancer très rare, un cancer du cœur.
En avril 1991, il doit subir une série d'opérations visant à retirer les tumeurs et à stopper l'expansion du cancer. Après s'être remis des opérations, il retourne travailler avec le groupe.
La dernière fois qu'il travaille avec le groupe a lieu en juillet 1991 lors du tournage de la vidéo God Gave Rock 'N Roll to You, qui est aussi son dernier enregistrement. Après avoir filmé la vidéo, sa santé s'était tellement détériorée qu'il ne peut pas enregistrer le reste de l'album et se fait renvoyer chez lui par le groupe pour qu'il se repose et se remette.
Les MTV Video Music Awards de septembre 1991 marque sa dernière apparition publique. Peu après, il souffre d'une rupture d'anévrisme et est emmené à l’hôpital.
Quelques jours plus tard, il souffre d'une hémorragie cérébrale et ne réveille pas.
Eric meurt le 24 novembre 1991. Cependant, il meurt le même jour que Freddie Mercury et reçoit donc peu d'attention de la part des médias.
Eric étant connu pour être très accessible avec ses fans, sa famille décide de rendre ses funérailles ouvertes au publique, l'enterrement reste cependant privé.
Il repose au Cedar Hill Cemetery dans la ville de Newburgh, New York.
