Born Thomas Edward Yorke on October 7 1968 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England, Thom Yorke is a musician and songwriter best known as the singer and main songwriter of Radiohead.
Inspired by Brian May, Thom began to learn to play guitar at the age of 7, when he received his first guitar. He joined his first band and started to write songs when he was 11.
While attenting the boys' Abingdon School, he met his future Radiohead bandmates Phil Selway, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood and Jonny Geenwood, with whom he formed the band On a Friday in 1985 (lineup: Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, piano), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals, percussion), Jonny Greenwood (guitar, keyboards), Colin Greenwood (bass), Phil Selway (drums, percussion, backing vocals)).
Thom took a gap year after leaving school and then, in 1988, put On a Friday on hiatus as he began studying at the University of Exeter. On a Friday would only rehearse during holiday breaks.
While at Exeter, he worked as a DJ and also performed with the band Headless Chickens, with whom he played songs which would later become Radiohead songs.
Thom and his friends from On a Friday began playing together again in 1991 after graduating from university and changed the name of the band to Radiohead. Their debut EP, Drill, was released in May 1992 and reached number 101 on the UK charts.
Later the same year, they quickly recorded their debut album, Pablo Honey, and released the single Creep which failed to meet success. However, in the months that followed, it started to become a hit in Israel, New Zealand, Spain, the United States, and in Scandinavian countries, and in 1993, it was reissued and reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. The following singles, Anyone Can Play Guitar, Pop Is Dead, and Stop Whispering sold poorly and the album's sales and reviews did not really impress.
Despite failing to meet success in their own country, Radiohead became really famous in the US and toured a lot there to promote the album. The pressure brought by such a sudden success almost made the band break up.
In 1994, two years after recording Pablo Honey, Radiohead began working on their second album. Recording was difficult and felt different for the band members, whose world had completly changed in two years. Thom had become disillusioned, fame and ego had troubled him.
In October the same year, they released the EP My Iron Lung, which was at first issued as two singles. The EP received positive reviews and sold a lot better than expected, prooving that the band had a loyal fanbase after all.
With The Bends released in March 1995, Radiohead finally succeeded both critically and commercially in their home country. The album reached number 4 on the UK Album Chart. Yet, it was not as successful abroad as Creep was and only managed to reach number 88 in the US. To this day, the album is still often considered as one of the best albums of all time.
The first song recorded for their third album, Lucky, was recorded in 5 hours on September 4 1995 and also featured on the War Child charity album The Help Album which was released to raise funds to aid war-strickens areas.
After deciding to self-produce the album, the band members began working again on the recording in early 1996. The recording went a lot better and felt more natural for the band than the recording of The Bends. The musicians were less stressed and feeling more confident, and Thom had began working on more abstract and less personnal lyrics.
Released in May 1997, OK Computer was critically acclaimed and reached number 1 in the UK and number 21 in the US. The album is considered as a step away from Britpop which was quite popular at the time and also as a first step toward the melancholic alternative rock style which would become widely popular in the following years.
To promote the album, Radiohead embarked on the year-long Against Demons world tour. During the tour, the band was accompanied and filmed by movie director Grant Gee who released the footage on November 30 1998 as the documentary Meeting People Is Easy.
The pressure of touring coupled with Thom's depression once again almost led to the band breaking up so the band took a break after the end of the tour. They performed only once in 1998, at an Amnesty International concert in Paris.
Tension was still high in early 1999 when they began working on their new album. Each member had his own visions for the band's future and it took them about one year and half to complete the recording sessions. Two albums came out of these sessions, Kid A (2000) which went platinum in the UK in the week following its release, and Amnesiac (2001) which is seen by the band as an "explanation" or other look on Kid A. Kid A however divided the fans, on one side were those who found it too difficult and on the other those who saw it as the band's best work. It is now considered as one of the best albums of the decade.
In the summer of 2002, while on tour in Spain and Portugal, Radiohead played some new songs live before heading to the studio in September to record their sixth studio album. Recording sessions for Hail to the Thief were a lot more relaxed and spontaneous than the ones for Kid A and Amnesiac. The album was released in June 2003 and quickly reached number 1 in the UK and number 3 in the US. The release of the album also marked the end of Radiohead's contract with EMI (record company).
After the end of the tour promoting Hail to the Thief, the band was put on hiatus so its members could rest and also work on side projects.
Thom began working on his debut solo album, The Eraser. Released in July 2006, the album was a hit, reaching number 3 in the UK and number 2 in the US.
The same year, Radiohead toured in Europe and North America and then entered the studio to start working on new material. The album, In Rainbows, was released in October 2007 on the band's website as a pay-what-you-want download, meaning that if they wanted, fans could get it for free. The album was released physically a couple of months later and reached number one in the UK and in the US.
In 2009, Thom released the double A-side single, Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses / The Hollow Earth, and formed the band Atoms for Peace in order to perform his solo songs live. The band's a supergroup composed of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitars, piano, keyboards, percussion), Flea (bass, melodica, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Mauro Refosco (percussion, additional drums, marimba), Nigel Godrich (keyboards, synthesizers, guitars, percussion, backing vocals). They stayed unnamed for their first performances but eventually announced their name in February 2010 while announcing an American tour.
Radiohead released their eighth studio album, The King of Limbs, in February 2011 on their website and one month later as physical copies. The album being rhythmically complex, the band had to hire a second drummer to perform the songs live during the tour promoting The King of Limbs.
After the end of the tour, Radiohead was put on hiatus again and Atoms for Peace released Amok (2013), their debut album. The release of the album was followed by a tour of Europe, the US, and Japan.
In September 2014, Thom released his second solo album, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. The album was released via a paid-for BitTorrent and became the most downloaded legal torrent of the year with over 4,5 million downloads in 6 months.
At about the same time, Radiohead began working on their ninth studio album.
On December 25 2015, they released the song Spectre as a free download on SoundCloud. The song had originally been written for the James Bond movie of the same name but was rejected, allowing the band to finish it the way they wanted.
On May 8 2016, Radiohead released their ninth album, A Moon Shaped Pool, on paid download and streaming websites and on CD and vinyl the following month. Although it was recorded between 2014 and 2016, it featured songs that had been written years earlier like True Love Waits (1995) and Burn the Witch (2000). The release of the album was followed by a tour going through Europe, North America and Japan.

Malgré la difficulté que le groupe a à trouver du succès dans son propre pays, Radiohead devient très populaire aux Etats-Unis et y fait beaucoup de concerts pour promouvoir l'album. La pression apportée par un succès aussi soudain fait presque se séparer le groupe.
En 1994, deux ans après avoir enregistré Pablo Honey, Radiohaed commencent à travailler sur leur deuxième album. L'enregistrement est compliqué et semble différent du premier pour les membres du groupe, dont le monde a complètement changé en deux ans. Thom est désabusé, la célébrité et son égo le troublent.
En octobre de la même année, ils sortent l'EP My Iron Lungs, qui sort d'abord sous la forme de deux singles. L'EP reçoit des critiques positives et se vend bien mieux que prévu, prouvant ainsi que le groupe s'est trouvé une communauté de fans fidèles.
Avec The Bends qui sort en mars 1995, Radiohead parvient enfin à satisfaire à la fois au niveau de la critique et au niveau des ventes dans leur pays d'origine. L'album se classe numéro 4 au Royaume-Uni. Cependant, il ne parvient pas à atteindre le succès de Creep dans les pays étrangés et ne se classe que numéro 88 aux Etats-Unis. L'album est considéré à ce jour comme l'un des meilleurs albums de tous les temps.
La première chanson enregistrée pour leur troisième album, Lucky, est enregistrée en 5 heures le 4 septembre 1995 et est aussi sur l'album de charité The Help Album de War Child qui sort afin de récolter des fonds pour aider les pays touchés par la guerre.

Pour promouvoir l'album, Radiohead font une tournée de un an, le Against Demons world tour. Pendant la tournée, le groupe est suivi et filmé par le réalisateur Grant Gee qui sort les images le 30 novembre 1998 sur le documentaire Meeting People Is Easy.
La pression de la tournée combinée avec la dépression de Thom manque une fois encore de faire se séparer le groupe. Ils décident dont de faire une pause après la tournée. Leur seule performance de 1998 a lieu lors d'un concert d'Amnesty International à Paris.
Les tensions entre les membres du groupe sont toujours présentes quand ils commencent à travailler sur leur nouvel album début 1999. Chaque membre a sa propre vision du future de Radiohead et ils mettent environ un an et demi à finir les sessions d'enregistrement. Deux albums sortent de ce temps passé au studio, Kid A (2000) qui devient disque de platine au Royaume-Uni la semaine de sa sortie, et Amnesiac (2001) qui est vu par le groupe comme une "explication" ou un autre regard sur Kid A. Kid A divise cependant les fans, d'un côté il y a ceux qui le trouvent trop compliqué et de l'autre ceux qui le voit comme le meilleur album du groupe. L'album est à présent considéré comme l'un des meilleurs albums de la décennie.
Pendant l'été 2002, alors qu'ils sont en tournée en Espagne et au Portugal, Radiohead jouent quelques nouvelles chansons avant de repartir en studio en septembre pour enregistrer leur sixième album. L'enregistrement de Hail to the Thief est beaucoup plus détendu et spontané que celui de Kid A et Amnesiac. L'album sort en juin 2003 et devient rapidement numéro 1 au Royaume-Uni et numéro 3 aux Etats-Unis. La sortie de l'album marque aussi la fin du contrat de Radiohead avec EMI (maison de disques).

Le 25 décembre 2015, ils sortent la chanson Spectre en téléchargement gratuit sur SoundCloud. La chanson avait à l'origine été écrite pour le film James Bond du même nom mais a finalement été rejetée, ce qui permit au groupe de la finir comme ils le voulaient.
Le 8 mai 2016, Radiohead sortent leur neuvième album, A Moon Shaped Pool, sur des sites de streaming et de téléchargement payant et en CD et vinyl le mois suivant.
