Happy birthday, Marky Ramone...
Born Marc Steven Bell on July 15 1956 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S., Marky Ramone is a musician and songwriter best known for being the drummer of the Ramones for 15 years.
He began playing the drums and joined his first band in the early 70s when, alongside Richie Wise and Kenny Aaronson, he formed Dust.
The band released two albums, Dust (1971) and Hard Attack (1972), before disbanding in 1972.
Later in 1972, after Billy Murcia's death, Marky auditionned for the New York Dolls to replace him on the drums but it was Jerry Nolan who was eventually chosen.
In the mid-70s, Marky played with Wayne County and the Backstreet Boys.
In 1976, he met Richard Hell and joined his band Richard Hell and the Voidoids.
One year later, the band released its debut album Blank Generation (lineup: Richard Hell (vocals, bass), Robert Quine (guitar, backing vocals), Ivan Julian (guitar, backing vocals), Marc Bell (drums)).
In 1978, Marky met Dee Dee Ramone at the CBGB and the latter asked him if he would be interested in joining his band.
Marky accepted and joined the Ramones in the spring of 1978.
On September 21 1978, the band released its fourth studio album, the first with Marky, Road to Ruin (lineup: Joey Ramone (vocals), Johnny Ramone (lead guitar), Dee Dee Ramone (bass, backing vocals), Marky Ramone (drums)).
After several tours and the releases of three other albums, Marky was fired from the band because of his alcoholism.
Yet, he joined the band again in 1987. He remained in the band until they decided to retire in 1996. Their final show took place at the Palace in Hollywood on August 6 1996 (final lineup: Joey Ramone (vocals), Johnny Ramone (lead guitar), C. J. Ramone (bass, backing vocals), Marky Ramone (drums)).
With the Ramones, Marky has performed on more than 15 releases and over 1700 shows.
In 1989, he played on Dee Dee Ramone's debut solo album Standing in the Spotlight (which he released under the moniker Dee Dee King).
After the retirement of the band, Marky formed Marky Ramone and the Intruders. The band released its eponymous first album in 1996.
In 2000, he played the drums on some songs of Joey Ramone's album Don't Worry About Me, which was released in 2002.
Marky formed a new band, Marky Ramone & the Speedkings, in 2001 (lineup: Nick Cooper Decock (vocals), Dee Jaywalker (guitars, vocals), Glen Meyer (bass), Marky Ramone (drums)).
On March 18 2002, along with Dee Dee Ramone, Johnny Ramone and Tommy Ramone, he attended the Ramones' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction's ceremony.
In 2005, Marky started hosting a radio show called Punk Rock Blitzkrieg on Sirius XM.
In February 2010, the Ramones received their first Grammy, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The same year, he formed the band Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg.
His autobiography, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As a Ramone, was released in 2015.
