Born Vincent John Cusano on August 6 1952 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, U.S., Vinnie Vincent is a musician and songwriter mostly known as a former member of Kiss and as the leader of Vinie Vincent Invasion.
Inspired by rock and roll and bluegrass, he began learning to play guitar when he was just a child. During the 70s, he played with several bands such as Heat, Warrior, Hitchhikers...
In 1978, he played rhythm and acoustic guitar, and tambourine, and sang backing vocals on Dan Hartman's album Instant Replay.
He moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a staff songwriter for the television series Joanie Loves Chachi and Happy Days, in 1980.
In 1982, Adam Mitchell introduced Vinnie Vincent to Kiss. He quickly got on well with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, and was accepted as Ace Frehley's replacement.
Although he is not credited on the album, Vinnie played the lead guitar on six of the nine tracks of Creatures of the Night (1982).
It's only in December 1982, at the beginning of the band's 10th Anniversary Tour, that he officially joined Kiss (lineup: Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Vinnie Vincent (lead guitar, backing vocals), Gene Simmons (bass, lead vocals), Eric Carr (drums, vocals)).
His stage persona, sometimes called The Ankh Warrior, was The Wiz (The Wizard).
Yet, disputes about money and Vinnie's role in the band deteriorated his relation with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons.
Vinnie was fired from the band by the end of the Creature of the Night/10th Anniversary Tour but he was hired again for the recording of Lick It Up because the band couldn't find a new guitarist in a so short time.
Lick It Up, released in 1983, marks the beginning of the "no makeup" era.
During the Lick It Up tour, tensions between Vinnie and Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons occured again, and Vinnie was fired after the end of the tour in 1984. He was replaced by Mark St. John.
The same year, Vinnie formed his own band, Vinnie Vincent Invasion (original lineup: Robert Fleischman (lead vocals), Vinnie Vincent (guitars, backing vocals), Dana Strum (bass, backing vocals), Bobby Rock (drums)).
The band released its debut album, Vinnie Vincent Invasion, in 1986.
Soon after, Robert Fleischman left the band and was replaced by Mark Slaughter.
The band's last album, All Systems Go, was released in 1988.
The band broke up in 1989 after that Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum, tired of Vinnie's attitude, had left to form their own band, Slaughter.
Vinnie worked again with Kiss as a songwriter for the album Revenge released in 1992.
In 1996, he released a solo EP, Euphoria, with Vinnie Vincent Invasion's original singer Robert Fleischman.
In 2008, KISS MY ANKH: A Tribute To Vinnie Vincent, was released. The album features several artists such as Troy Patrick Farrell (White Lion), T. J. Racer (Nitro), and Ryan Roxie (Alice Cooper) covering songs from Vinnie's career with Kiss and songs of the Vinnie Vincent Invasion.
