Happy birthday, Roger Taylor...
Born Roger Meddows Taylor on July 26 1949 in Dersingham, Norfolk, England, Roger Taylor is a musician, singer and songwriter. He is mostly known as the drummer of Queen.
Through his career, he has collaborated with artists like Robert Plant, Roger Waters, Roger Daltrey, Steve Vai, Eric Clapton...
He formed his first band, the Bubblingover Boys, in which he played the ukulele, when he was 7 years old.
In 1968, he met Brian May and Tim Staffell. Together, they formed the band Smile (lineup: Tim Staffell (vocals, bass), Brian May (lead guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums)) which lasted two years.
In 1970, after the band split up, Freddie Mercury, who was a big fan of Smile, convinced Brian May and Roger Taylor to keep on working together, to change their name to Queen and he joined them.
In 1971, bassist John Deacon joined the band.
The band released their debut album, Queen, in 1973.
Roger Taylor is the third most credited songwriter for the band. He composed songs like Stone Cold Crazy, Under Pressure, Radio Ga ga, A Kind of Magic...
He also sings on some Queen songs like Loser in the End, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Human Body...
He was usually the higher-range voice in the band's three-part vocal harmonies. His voice sas often confused with a woman's voice or a synthesiser effect. His vocal range spans four octaves.
Roger Taylor also has a solo career. He released his first solo single, I Wanna Testify, in 1977.
In 1981, his first solo album, Fun in Space, on which he performs drums, percussion, lead and backing vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards, was released.
In 1987, he formed the band The Cross (lineup: Roger Taylor (lead & backing vocals, guitar), Spike Edney (keyboards, mandolin, backing vocals), Clayton Moss (lead guitar, backing vocals), Peter Noone (bass, backing vocals), Josh Macrae (drums, percussion, backing vocals)).
The band released three studio albums: Shove It (1987), Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know (1990) and Blue Rock (1991).
In 1993, after performing a final show, the band broke up. After that, Taylor kept on working with Queen and produced solo album.
On September 15 2008, Queen + Paul Rodgers (Brian May (lead guitars, vocals), Paul Rodgers (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, harmonica), Roger Taylor (drums, percussions, vocals)) released its debut studio album, The Cosmo Rocks.
In 2011, alongside Roger Daltrey and Steven Tyler, Roger Taylor joined the advisory board of Edge Music Network.
On August 12 2012, Taylor performed in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.
