Happy birthday, Zakk Wylde...
Born Jeffrey Phillip Wielandt on January 14 1967 in Bayonne, New Jersey, U.S, Zakk Wylde is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known as Ozzy Osbourne's former guitarist, and also as the founder of Black Label Society.
His first band was a local band called Stone Henge.
In 1987, he sent a demo tape to Ozzy Osbourne and was hired to replace Jake E. Lee.
The first Ozzy Osbourne's album on which he played was No Rest for the Wicked (1988) (lineup in 1988: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Zakk Wylde (guitar), Bob Daisley (bass), Randy Castillo (drums), John Sinclair (keyboards)).
In 1991, Zakk founded the band Pride & Glory. They released their debut album, Pride & Glory, in 1994 (lineup in 1994: Zakk Wylde (lead vocals, backing vocals, guitars, piano, mandolin, banjo, harmonica), James LoMenzo (bass, backing vocals, double bass, twelve-string guitar), Brian Tichy (drums, percussion)).
The band broke up later this year.
In 1995, Zakk left Ozzy Osbourne and was replaced by Joe Holmes.
The same year, he auditioned for Guns N' Roses.
Zakk released his first solo album, Book of Shadows, in 1996.
In 1998, he founded the band Black Label Society (original lineup: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitars, bass, piano), Phil Ondich (drums)).
In 2001, Zakk rejoined Ozzy Osbourne. The same year, Ozzy Osbourne released the album Down to Earth (lineup: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Zakk Wylde (guitars), Robert Trujillo (bass), Mike Bordin (drums)).
One year after, Black Label Society released the album 1919 Eternal (lineup: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitars, bass), Robert Trujillo (bass on tracks 3, 4), Craig Nunenmacher (drums), Christian Werr (drums on tracks 1, 3, 4)).
Zakk was recognized at the Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame, leaving his handprints and signature, on January 17 2006.
The same year, Black Label Society headlined the second stage at the Ozzfest, therefore Zakk had to play for both Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society on some dates.
The last Ozzy Osbourne's album on which he played was Black Rain (2007).
In 2011, he played on Black Veil Brides' cover of Kiss' Unholy.
In 2014, Black Label Society released the album Catacombs of the Black Vatican (lineup: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitar, piano, acoustic guitar), John DeServio (bass, additional vocals), Chad Szeliga (drums)).
