Happy birthday, Phil Collen...
Born Philip Kenneth Collen on December 8 1957 in Hackney, London, England, Phil Collen is a musician and songwriter mostly known as one of the guitarists of Def Leppard.
He is a self-educated guitarist. When he was 16, he bought a red Gibson SG and decided to drop school to focus on music.
He joined bands like Tush, Dumb Blondes, Lucy, and Girl.
Phil started to know success with Girl, especially due to the band's two first albums, Sheer Greed and Wasted Youth (lineup in 1980: Phil Lewis (vocals), Phil Collen (lead guitar, backing vocals), Gerry Laffy (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Simon Laffy (bass, backing vocals), Dave Gaynor (drums, backing vocals)).
In 1981, he was proposed by Joe Elliott and Steve Clark to join Def Leppard. Yet, Phil stayed in Girl because there was no need to replace Pete Willis then.
On July 12 1982, one day after Pete Willis got fired, Phil joined Def Leppard (lineup in 1982: Joe Elliott (lead vocals, additional guitar, additional keyboards), Steve Clark (guitar, backing vocals), Phil Collen (guitar, backing vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals, additional guitar, additional keyboards), Rick Allen (drums, percussion, backing vocals)).
He quickly became close friend with Steve Clark and their friendship led to the trademark dual-guitar sound of Def Leppard.
After developing a serious addiction to alcohol, Phil decided to quit drinking alcohol, and eating meat in order to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
In 1991, after Steve Clark died of alcohol abused, Phil had not only to face the loss of his friend but also the challenge of playing, for the recording of the album Adrenalize, music that had been written for Steve Clark's playing style. Their styles were quite different and it made it pretty difficult for Phil to play Steve Clark's part. Indeed, Phil's playing is precise and technical whereas Steve Clark's playing was more rhythmic and melodic.
At this time, Phil considered quitting Def Leppard. He didn't feel like playing guitar anymore.
In late 1991 and early 1992, the band audtionned guitarists like Adrian Smith, John Sykes, and Gary Hoey to replace Steve Clark.
When Vivian Campbell joined the band in 1992, Phil was relieved of the pressure of having to play Steve Clark's parts for concerts.
With Joe Elliott, Trevor Bolder, Mick Woodmansey and Dick Decent, Phil formed, as a tribute to Mick Ronson, Cybernauts, a David Bowie cover band.
In 2004, he formed the band Man Raze (lineup: Phil Collen (vocals, guitar), Simon Laffy (bass, backing vocals), Paul Cook (drums)).
In 2008, Man Raze released its debut album, Surreal. The same year, Def Leppard released its ninth album, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.
The following year, Man Raze toured with Alice Cooper.
With The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Van Halen, Def Leppard are in the list of the only five rock bands with two original studio
In May 2015, they will release a new album.
To conclude, we wish a happy birthday and years of rock to Phil Collen!

Joyeux anniversaire, Phil Collen ...
La même année, Def Leppard sort son neuvième album, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.
