Happy birthday, Peter Criss...
Born George Peter John Criscuola on December 20 1945 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S., Peter Criss is a musician, songwriter and actor mostly known as the original drummer and one of the founding members of Kiss. His Kiss persona was the Catman.
As a child, he was friend with Jerry Nolan, who would later play in the New York Dolls and with Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers.
Peter was a jazz fan and he studied at the Metropole Club in New York with his idol Gene Krupa.
During the 60s, he played with several rock bands and jazz bands in New York and New Jersey.
In the early 70s, he played in a band called Chelsea, which later changed its name to Lips.
After Lips broke up, Peter placed an advertisement in Rolling Stone which was answered by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, who were looking for members for their band.
In 1973, Ace Frehley joined them; Kiss was born (original lineup (1973-1980): Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Ace Frehley (lead guitar, backing vocals), Gene Simmons (bass, lead vocals), Peter Criss (drums, backing vocals)).
In February 1974, Kiss released its debut album, Kiss.
Peter co-wrote some Kiss songs like Beth, on which he sang the lead vocals. He wrote several of his contributions to Kiss with his former bandmate Stan Penridge.
He also sang the lead vocals on songs like Black Diamond and Hard Luck Woman.
He released his first solo album, Peter Criss, in 1978, when all the members of Kiss released solo albums.
The same year, he was injured in a serious car accident.
On Dynasty, which was released in 1979, he only played on Dirty Livin', which he had composed.
He is credited on the 1980 release Unmasked though he didn't play at all. The band hired Anton Fig as session drummer for this album.
Peter was fired in 1980 and replaced by Eric Carr.
After that, he started working on solo albums, Out of Control (1980) and Let Me Rock You (1982), which both were commercial failures.
During the 80s and the early 90s, he played in many bands which rarely lasted over a year. With another ex-Kiss member, Mark St. John, he played in a band called The Keep.
He played the percussions and sang on one track on Ace Frehley's album Trouble Walkin' (1989).
In the early 90s, he formed a band which he named Criss, which featured future Queensrÿche guitarist Mike Stone. The band released its debut EP, Criss, in December 1993, and supported Ace Frehley's band on the Bad Boys Tour in 1995.
Kiss' original lineup reunited for the 1996-1997 Alive/Worldwide Tour and then for the 1998's album, Psycho Circus. Yet, it was later discovered that Peter had played the drums on only one track (Into the Void) of the album.
Tensions had started to appear again between him and Kiss, and he left the band in 2001 and was replaced by Eric Singer. However, he rejoined them in late 2002 and he departed in March 2004. He was replaced by Eric Singer again. Peter appears Kiss Symphony: Alive IV DVD and CD which were released in 2003.
Since his last departure from Kiss, Peter has been keeping his public appearances to the minimum.
On July 24 2007, he released a solo album, One for All.
He released his autobiography, Makeup to Breakup: My Life In and Out of Kiss, on October 23 2012.
In 2014, Peter was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Kiss.
To conclude, we wish a happy birthday and years of rock to Peter Criss!
