Happy birthday Joey Ramone...
Born Jeffrey Ross Hyman on May 19, 1951 in Forest Hills, Queens New York, US (died : April 15 2001), Joey Ramone was a musician and singer-songwritter best known as the lead vocalist of the punk rock band the Ramones. Being the frontan of the Ramones as well as his particular voice and his attitude made him a countercultural icon.
He grew up in Forest Hills (Queens, New York) where him and his future bandmates (Johnny Ramone, Tommy Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone) attended Forest Hills High School.
He was a fan of David Bowie, The Who, The Beatles and The Stooges among other bands. He shares a birthday with his idol, Pete Townshend of The Who.
When he was 13, he started to play the drums and played during his teenage.
In 1972, he started singing the glam punk band Sniper. He played with Sniper until he was replaced by Alan Turner in early 1974.
In 1974, Hyman co-founded the Ramones with his friends John Cummings (Johnny Ramone) and Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone). They all took stage names and used Ramone as their surname (which is a referrence to a story saying that Paul McCartney used the stage name Paul Ramon during the Beatles early days, when the band was using the name the Silver Beetles.)
Initially, Dee Dee was the original vocalist and Joey was the drummer. Thomas Erdelyi, their manager, suggested Joey switch to vocals. Erdelyi eventually became the band's drummer after a series of unseccessful auditions. He took the name of Tommy Ramone.
After a tour with Lollalooza music festival, the band played their final show and disbanded (1996).
The Ramones were inducted to the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001.
The Ramones were voted the second greatest rock and roll band ever in Spin, in 2002 (The Beatles were voted first).
After a seven-year battle, Joey died of lymphoma at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on April 15, 2001.
Rock in Peace Joey!

Joyeux anniversaire, Joey Ramone ...
