Michael Kiske (2013), former lead vocalist for the German power metal band Helloween

Happy birthday, Michael Kiske...
Born on January 24 1968 in Hamburg, Germany, Michael Kiske is a singer and songwriter best known as the former singer of Helloween.
When he was 17, he sang in a band named III Prophecy. They recorded demos but never commercially released anything.
He was asked to join Helloween in 1986, when he was just 18. He was offered to be the lead singer of the band because Kai Hansen, the founder of the band, had issues being both the lead vocalist and the lead guitarist at the same time. Michael had listened the band's debut album Walls of Jericho and he disliked it so he at first rejected the band's offer, but when asked to join the band a second time, he finally accepted.
One year later, Helloween released its second album and first album with Michael, Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I (lineup: Michael Kiske (vocals), Kai Hansen (lead & rhythm guitar), Michael Weikath (lead & rhythm guitar), Markus Grosskopf (bass guitar), Ingo Schwichtenberg (drums)). The album is considered a milestone in the creation of power metal.
They released Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part II in 1988. The album brought the band even more success than the previous one, making them famous in Europe, Asia and the U.S..
During their headline tour in 1988, they recorded the live album Live in the U.K.. The album was recorded in November 1988 in Edinburgh, Scotland and Manchester, England and released in 1989. It's the only live album featuring Michael and also the last release recorded with Kai Hansen.
After Kai Hansen's departure and the release of Live in the U.K., the band met label problems with Noise. The label prevented them from releasing new material and touring before finally releasing them from their contract. Because of these issues, rumors that the band had split up started to spread. Yet, they eventually released a new studio album, Pink Bubbles Go Ape, in 1991 (lineup: Michael Kiske (vocals), Roland Grapow (lead & rhythm guitar), Michael Weikath (lead & rhythm guitar), Markus Grosskopf (bass guitar), Ingo Schwichtenberg (drums)). The album was less heavy and more humor oriented than the previous ones. Both Pink Bubbles Go Ape and the following album Chameleon (1993) failed critically and commercially. Tensions between the band members worsened and, in 1993, Ingo Schwichtenberg and Michael were fired from the band, the first because of his issues due to drugs and mental illness and the latter because Michael Weikath no longer wanted to work with him at all. Michael was replaced in Helloween by Andi Deris.
Michael released his first solo album, Instant Clarity, in 1996. The album featured guest performances by Adrian Smith and Kai Hansen.
His second solo album Readiness to Sacrifice, really disparate from Michael's musical roots, was released in Japan and South Korea in 1999 and in Europe in 2001.
In 2000, he joined Tobias Sammet's rock opera band named Avantasia. Michael sang the role of Lugaid Vandroiy on the album The Metal Opera and on its sequel The Metal Opera Part II.
Michael came back to rock music in 2003 with his new project, SupaRed. In January of the same year, the band released a self-titled album whose modern rock sound was distinguishable from Michael's previous works. However, the album was a commercial fail and the band soon split up.
In 2004, Michael joined the project founded by Frontiers Records president Serafino Perugino: Place Vendome (lineup: Michael Kiske (vocals), Uwe Reitenauer (guitars), Dennis Ward (bass guitar), Kosta Zafiriou (drums), Gunther Werno (keyboards)). Place Vendome released its debut self-titled album in October 2005.
In 2006, Michael released his third solo album, Kiske.
In 2009, alongside Dennis Ward, Kosta Zafiriou and Mandy Meyer, he formed the band Unisonic. They were joined by Kai Hansen in 2011 and they released their debut EP, Ignition, and their debut album self-titled album in 2012 (lineup: Michael Kiske (lead vocals), Mandy Meyer (lead & rhythm guitars), Kai Hansen (lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals), Dennis Ward (bass guitar, backing vocals), Kosta Zafiriou (drums, percussion)).
In 2009, Michael began a collaboration with Amanda Somerville. The project was called Kiske/Somerville and they released their first album, also called Kiske/Somerville, in 2010.
The same year, Michael recorded guest vocals for the song All You Need To Know on Kai Hansen's band Gamma Ray's To The Metal album.
In 2013, he performed on Avantasia's The Mystery of Time, and Place Vendome released its third and last album, Thunder in the Distance (Place Vendome's lineup: Michael Kiske (vocals), Uwe Reitenauer (guitars), Dennis Ward (bass guitar), Dirk Bruinenberg (drums), Gunther Werno (keyboards)).
In 2014, Unisonic released a EP, For the Kingdom, and an album, Light of Dawn.
Amanda Somerville and Michael released City of Heroes, their second album as Kiske/Somerville, in 2015.
Michael performed on Avantasia's lastest album Ghostlights. The album will be released on January 29 2016 and in March 2016 will begin the Ghostlights World Tour.
To conclude, we wish a happy birthday and years of rock to Michael Kiske!

Joyeux anniversaire, Michael Kiske ...
Le groupe sort Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part II en 1988.
La même année, Michael chante sur la chanson All You Need To Know sur l'album To The Metal du groupe de Kai Hansen appelé Gamma Ray.
